NEW HIGHWAY WIDENING PROJECT TO BRING TRAFFIC CONGESTION RELIEF TO HIGHWAY 99

Fresno/Tulare –Caltrans and the Tulare County Association of Governments today celebrated the start of construction on a project that will widen State Highway 99 between Goshen and Kingsburg, reducing traffic congestion for 50,000 motorists daily.

The $110 million project received $69 million of its funding from Proposition 1B, the 2006 voter-approved transportation bond.

"Proposition 1B is paying for vital transportation projects that relieve traffic congestion and strengthen our economy by providing jobs when we most need them," said Caltrans Director Cindy McKim. "With this highway project, the people of Fresno and Tulare counties can see their tax dollars at work."

Approximately 14 miles of Highway 99 will be widened from a four-lane freeway to a six-lane freeway from Goshen in Tulare County to just north of the Tulare/Fresno county line near Kingsburg. The project will reduce congestion and increase the overall capacity of the highway to better accommodate future traffic volumes, which are expected to double by 2040.

To date the state has allocated nearly $8 billion in Proposition 1B funds for transportation purposes statewide.
