STIMULUS PROVIDES $7.1 MILLION FOR TRANSPORTATION PROJECT ON STATE ROUTE 20 IN COLUSA COUNTY

Williams – Caltrans today announced that construction has begun on a $7.1 million project that will decrease highway closures and roadway damage resulting from slides along State Route 20 in Colusa County. The project was financed entirely by President Obama’s American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (Recovery Act).

"My Administration is working hand-in-hand with President Obama's team to ensure stimulus dollars are pumped into California quickly and responsibly to stimulate the economy and in this instance - invest in the future of California's transportation infrastructure," said Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.

The project will reconstruct and stabilize nearly two miles of embankment slopes near the junction of SR-20 and Interstate 5 in Williams. A mile-long safety guardrail will also be installed and damaged drainage inlets and downdrains will be rebuilt.

“This project will reduce rockslides that could damage or close the roadway and save taxpayers the cost of making more expensive repairs in the future,” said Caltrans Chief Deputy Director Cindy McKim.

“The stimulus funds allow us to re-hire workers who were laid off, and if we find we can use additional help, we'll hire people from the union hall in Yuba City”, said Doug Holmes, Superintendent at North Bay Construction of Petaluma, the project’s contractor.

Under Governor Schwarzenegger's leadership, California has obligated more than $2.53 billion in Recovery Act funding to 915 highway, local street and job training transportation projects statewide.  For more information on the Recovery Act visit: http://recovery.ca.gov
