VEHICLE HEADLIGHTS MUST BE ON IN THE RAIN
Sacramento –The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is utilizing its electronic message signs on freeways, Highway Advisory Radio and the media to remind motorists that it is now the law to turn on their headlights when driving in the rain.
“Rain is forecasted for Northern California over the next few days and some drivers may not realize that it is now the law to turn on their vehicles’ headlights when it’s raining and wipers are on,” said Caltrans Director Will Kempton. “To improve driving safety during this weekend’s storms, Caltrans’ signs will state, ‘Wipers On! Headlights On!’”
In support of our continuous safety efforts at Caltrans, the department recently created a new policy to inform motorists of new driving safety laws. The public and the media have reported poor compliance with the law that went into effect in January, so Caltrans is planning to use their electronic signs in Northern California to provide a low-cost, effective message that will be helpful to the public.
Caltrans is also planning to use the electronic message signs to remind motorists that the hands-free cell phone law goes into effect July 1.
