STATE ROUTE 99/WHITMORE AVENUE INTERCHANGE GROUNDBREAKING CEREMONY

STANISLAUS COUNTY - The Department of Transportation (Caltrans) today hosted a groundbreaking ceremony for the $26 million State Route 99 (SR-99)/Whitmore Avenue Interchange Project. The project is partially funded by Proposition 1B, the 2006 voter-approved transportation bond.

"This Proposition 1B funded project will improve safety, help stimulate the economy and decrease traffic congestion in the area," said Governor Schwarzenegger. "The people of California spoke loud and clear when they voted for Proposition 1B because they wanted investment in California's infrastructure and economy - and this is an example of that investment."

The project will replace the existing Whitmore Avenue interchange with a new wider structure over SR-99 and widen Whitmore Avenue to four lanes between Blaker Road and Central Avenue. Operational improvements will be made at adjoining streets and to the northbound on and off-ramps at SR-99.

"This is an important project to the city of Ceres and Stanislaus County," said Kome Ajise, Caltrans District 10 Director. "This interchange will relieve current congestion and support the movement of goods and people."

Speakers included: Kome Ajise, Caltrans District 10 Director; Commissioner R. Kirk Lindsay, California Transportation Commission; Vince Harris, Executive Director, Stanislaus Council of Governments; Mayor Anthony Canella, City of Ceres; Lisa Mantarro, District Director for United States Congressman Dennis Cardoza; Dana Ferreira, Field Representative for State Senator Jeffery Denham; and, Lucille Dinant,
Field Representative for State Assembly Member Greg Aghazarian.
