On-The-Job-Training Program (OJT)

The California Department of Transportation is committed to promoting the establishment of apprenticeship and training programs that target under-represented segments of the U.S. workforce, including veterans, minorities, women, and disadvantaged individuals.  The Federal Highway Administration awards funding to community based organizations for On-the-Job Training (OJT) services administered by Caltrans for the development and enhancement of job training and apprenticeship programs as authorized by 23 U.S.C. 140(b), for the provision of supportive services in support of training programs approved under 23 CFR 230A.

FY 2012 On-the-Job Training/Supportive Services awards – The selection announcement has been delayed due to the new approval process requirements that have been implemented over the past few months, the OJT/SS funding proposals and recommendations will need additional review before final decisions can be made.

The National Summer Training Institute (NSTI) Program

The National Summer Transportation Institute (NSTI) is a US Department of Transportation/Federal Highway Administration, (USDOT/FHWA) educational initiative that addresses a crucial workforce need for the transportation industry. An unprecedented number of transportation employees are eligible to retire or will soon become eligible to retire. This creates a need for and provides a great opportunity to prepare youth for future transportation careers. Through public, private and academic partnerships, the NSTI provides transportation career awareness to secondary school students and encourages them to consider transportation-related courses of study in their higher education pursuits. In 4-week sessions on school campuses throughout the Nation, thousands of students explore the transportation industry through a variety of intermodal transportation experiences and participate in math, science, and technology enrichment activities.

Summer Transportation Internship Program for Diverse Groups (STIPDG) is for students in all majors.

Program Objective

The U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT), Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) accepts applications for STIPD Internship Programs. Funded by the FHWA’s Office of Business & Economic Opportunities’ On-the-Job Training Supportive Services Program, the objective of the STIPDG is to provide college/university students with hands-on experience and on-the-job training while working on current transportation-related topics and issues. The STIPDG is open to all qualified applicants. Designed to provide qualified women, persons with disabilities, and members of diverse groups with summer opportunities in transportation where these groups have been under-represented.
