Context Sensitive Solutions

Caltrans Landscape Architects' role in implementing the Director's Policy (DP #22) on Context Sensitive Solutions (CSS) is: development of design flexibility guidance; identification of successful examples of CSS application; implementation of training on the application of CSS; and revision of manuals, policy, procedures, and standards to facilitate the application of CSS.

The collaborative effort between stakeholders to integrate the highway with the natural and built environment is a major force behind the Context Sensitive Solutions movement. But this concept isn't new. Landscape Architects played a key role in the development through collaboration with Architects, and Engineers. This collaborative effort lead by Landscape Architects was a hallmark of parkway design, an effort that was eventually transferred directly to highway design. A role that Landscape Architects continue to play today.

American Society of Landscape Architects 2001 Merit Award - Analysis and Planning

After more than a 10-year stalemate between a state Department of Transportation and a Tribal Authorities of an Indian reservation to widen an existing highway through the reservation, Landscape Architects were hired to resolve the conflict. They took the lead on the highway design team and used the CSS process of collaborative stakeholders to create an alternative design solution that was agreed to by all stakeholders.
