BUCKHORN - The Buckhorn Grade Improvement Project is located on Highway 299 from near the Trinity/Shasta County line to approximately 7 miles to the east down the grade to Yankee Gulch. The project is being developed by the California Department of Transportation in conjunction with our local county partners.
Caltrans is currently on schedule to deliver the preliminary alignment alternative and an approved environmental document by October 2008. If additional funding is secured, construction of a section of the project could begin as early as March, 2011. more |

SANDHOUSE PASSING LANE - Caltrans and Trinity County are proposing to construct a westbound passing lane on State Route 299 near Buckhorn Maintenance Station. This project will provide an opportunity for cars to safely pass slower moving trucks and other vehicles after the climb up Buckhorn Summit. The highway will be widened to the north side of the road and will have a 12-foot lane width for the passing lane, a four-foot shoulder and a four-foot median. |

YANKEE GULCH - This project proposes to improve the 30 mph curve on State Route 299 west of Redding and increase the design speed to 50 mph. This improvement addresses a concentration of 22 collisions in five years. The purpose is to reduce the number and severity of accidents at this location by improving stopping sight distance, increasing the clear recovery zone and improving the alignment and bringing the roadway up to current design standards. |
