Alturas 299 Widening - Fact Sheet The Alturas 299 Widening project proposes to improve safety and pedestrian mobility on a section of highway in Alturas on State Route (SR) 299 from Mill Street to Highway 395. Mobility of bicycles and pedestrians is limited due to narrow shoulder widths and poor drainage. The shoulder widths meet the current standards but due to the flat terrain, water ponds in areas in front of businesses and along the highway near the intersection of SR395. Traffic flow on this stretch of SR 299 is occasionally interrupted due to the turning movements of vehicles traveling to the residential and commercial developed areas of Alturas. This project proposes to install underground drainage features as well as concrete valley gutters to improve drainage along the highway. Turn pockets at key intersections will reduce traffic queuing and wider paved shoulders will accommodate pedestrians and bicycles. The anticipated start of construction is May 2014 with an estimated 120 working days for the entire project. |
