Alturas 299 Widening

ALTURAS 299 WIDENING - This project proposes to improve safety and mobility with the construction of a continuous two-way left turn lane and paved shoulders in Modoc County on State Route (SR) 299 from Mill Street to Highway 395. Traffic flow on this stretch of SR 299 is interrupted due to the turning movements of vehicles traveling to the residential and commercial developed areas of Alturas. The widening project will make the transition from the highway into the city smoothly and improve mobility and safety for the traveling public. The continuous left-turn lane will improve the flow of traffic and reduce congestion. Wider paved shoulders will accommodate pedestrians and bicycles. With the addition of a left turn lane, the highway-rail grade crossing warning system will be upgraded.

There is no curb and gutter in the project limits and storm water is carried entirely by open channels (ditches and swales). This project proposes to install underground drainage systems as well as concrete valley gutters to improve drainage along the highway.

The anticipated start of construction is June 2012 with an estimated 120 working days for the entire project.
