Project Benefits

This project will reduce congestion and provide additional traffic capacity on U.S. Route 101 from the Santa Maria Way interchange to the State Route 135 (Broadway) interchange and reduce associated traffic congestion on the adjacent arterial streets.

The project will widen the existing four-lane freeway (two lanes is each direction) to a six-lane freeway (with three lanes in each direction). The widening will be within the existing 14 m to 17.2 m (46 to 56-foot) median area. The existing inside shoulders will be removed and the entire median area paved to include two 3.6 m (12 foot) traveled lanes, two 3 m (10 foot) inside shoulders and a type 60 concrete median barrier placed in the area between the inside shoulders. There are five locations where Soundwalls are to be placed.

At the five existing freeway over-crossings at Betteravia Road, Stowell Road, Alvin Avenue, Donovan Road and Broadway (Route 135), the existing inside shoulder width of 2.4 m (eight feet) will be retained. Stowell and Donovan will have slightly less than 2.4 meter shoulders due to the new larger columns recently constructed. The three existing under-crossings at Santa Maria Way (northbound only), Jones Street (north and southbound) and Main Street (north and southbound) are to be widened to accommodate the additional lanes and wider shoulders.

Preliminary Detour and Lane Closure Information (subject to change)

Mainline

  • Full closures are recommended to only occur at night (Ramps could be closed during the day non-peak hours)
Jones Street, Main Street and Santa Maria Way
  • The under-crossings at Jones Street and Main Street will not have lane closures at the same time.
  • Santa Maria Way and Jones Street are proposed to have one lane open in each direction.
  • Main Street will be will be reduced to one through lane in each direction and two left turn lanes for each ramp during construction of the footings. Otherwise it will be two through lanes in each direction and two left turn lanes for the ramp intersections.
  • There may be certain operations requiring a 24/7 lane closure behind k-rail.
  • On all of these streets the majority of the work will be behind the K-rail.
  • Structures estimated 130 working days to do all three structures.
    - Anticipate there will be full closure's for structures work (TBD):
    - Approximately 6 nights at Santa Maria Way and Jones St
    - Approximately 4 nights at Main Street

Median Barrier

A permanent concrete barrier will be constructed in the median and incorporates an architectural treatment similar to those on the existing bridge rails on the Stowell Road and Donovan Road over-crossings in Santa Maria. The treatment will be located at key locations throughout the project: Betteravia Road, Stowell Road, Alvin Avenue and Donovan Road Overcrossing. The architectural treatment is to extend 175 meters (approximately 575 feet) on either side of the structure.
