State Route 163 Closed on Consecutive Sundays for Maintenance

SAN DIEGO——Southbound State Route (SR-163) will be closed from Sixth Avenue to Ash Street Sunday, from 3-10 a.m. for maintenance activities, according to Caltrans. The southbound on-ramps on this section of SR-163 will also be closed.

Crews will close northbound SR-163 from Interstate 5 (I-5) to Washington Street Sunday, Oct. 29 from 3-10 a.m. The northbound on-ramps will also be closed except the Sixth Avenue on-ramp to northbound SR-163, which will remain open.

Detours for the closures are as follows:

  • For southbound SR-163: Motorists on eastbound or westbound Interstate 8 (I-8), may take southbound I-5 and exit at Tenth Avenue to access downtown San Diego.

  • For northbound SR-163: Motorists wanting to access SR-163 from downtown San Diego may take northbound I-5 to eastbound I-8 to southbound SR-163 to access off-ramps.

Full closures on SR-163 are needed so that crews can safely work on the highway. SR-163 is a designated historic and scenic route with narrow shoulders and multiple on and off-ramps.

Several crews will work simultaneously during the closures to repair guardrails, clear weeds, remove litter and replace pavement markers.

Caltrans reminds drivers to “Be Work Zone Alert” by avoiding distracted driving, paying constant attention to traffic, and slowing down when approaching road closures.
