Calexico State Route 98/Cesar Chavez Boulevard Opens Wednesday
EL CENTRO, Calif——Construction crews will open Cesar Chavez Boulevard at State Route 98 (SR-98) in Calexico Wednesday afternoon—two months earlier than expected, according to Caltrans.
At the same time, the full closure on SR-98 from V V Williams Avenue though the Cesar Chavez Boulevard intersection will be moved to a three-block portion of the highway just east of Cesar Chavez Boulevard to just west of Ollie Avenue. The change marks progress onto the fourth and final stage of the SR-98 Widening Project.
The Stage 4 closure is scheduled to be in place for four months with the following detours for local traffic:
- Eastbound SR-98: Traffic will be detoured to Cesar Chavez Boulevard south to Grant Street east, to Imperial Avenue (State Route 111) north.
- Alternative eastbound SR-98: Motorists may also use V V Williams Avenue north to Cole Boulevard east, to southbound State Route 111 (SR-111) to SR-98.
- Westbound SR-98: Traffic will be detoured to Ollie Avenue south to McKinley Street east, to Harold Avenue south, to Grant Street west, to Cesar Chavez Boulevard north.
- Alternative westbound SR-98: Motorists may take Imperial Avenue (State Route 111) south to Grant Street west, to Cesar Chavez Boulevard north.
Commercial vehicles will continue using Interstate 8 as a detour route.
Construction on Phase 1B of the SR-98 Widening Project began in March to widen SR-98 from two to four lanes from east of Eady Avenue to west of Ollie Avenue including widening and signalizing the intersection at Cesar Chavez Boulevard. The estimated total cost of Phase 1B is $12.9 million. Construction is expected to be completed in early 2018.
Motorists are reminded to Be Work Zone Alert and to move over a lane or slow when driving through highway work zones.
