Westbound I-8 On-ramp at Algodones Road/State Route 186 Reopens Today

EL CENTRO, Calif.——Caltrans announced that the Interstate 8 (I-8) westbound on-ramp at Algodones Road/State Route 186 (SR-186) will re-open today as construction progresses on Segment 3 on the I-8 Update Project in Imperial County. Both lanes on westbound I-8 from the California-Arizona state line to just west of Algodones Road/SR-186 have been reopened.

Crews expect to open the eastbound lanes on this section of I-8 within two weeks. The eastbound I-8 on-ramp at 4th Avenue in Winterhaven remains closed as crews continue work to install new sidewalks and pedestrian crossings that meet Americans with Disabilities Act standards. Detour signs are in place directing motorists to use Winterhaven Drive (Exit 170). Segment 3 is scheduled for completion in fall.

Lane reductions to one lane in each direction on I-8 continue for seven miles on Segment 5 from just west of the Algodones Road/SR-186 separation to west of Ogilby Road overcrossing.  A five-mile section of I-8 from about one-half mile west of State Route 111 to one-half mile east of Barbara Worth Drive has also been reduced to one lane in each direction for Segment 4 work.

Traffic will be significantly impacted during construction with possible travel delays. Signs have been placed to alert motorists to the construction and lane reduction. The speed limit is also  reduced in the work zone.

The I-8 Update is a major pavement rehabilitation project consisting of five segments that will construct Continuously Reinforced Concrete Pavement (CRCP) over 48 miles on Interstate 8 in Imperial County. The work will result in a long-lasting superior roadway, capable of withstanding the heaviest traffic loads. Construction began in 2016 and will be completed by 2019.

Caltrans reminds motorists to slow down when driving through highway work zones. Motorists are reminded to watch for highway workers and moving construction equipment in the project area.
